When to Plant Your Garden In Regina, Saskatchewan For Best Results.

First thing to note is that on average, your frost-free growing season in Regina starts May 21 and ends Sep 10, totalling 112 days.

Bedding Plants

In the greenhouse, bedding plants have been living the soft life: high humidity, regular water, bright light, still air and warm temperatures. They are not ready for the harsh reality of outdoors in Regina. Full sun and wind can kill them if they haven’t been “hardened off” or acclimatized. Do this by putting them outside during the daytime in a shady, sheltered site when air temperature is above 15 C. Bring them in at night. Over a period of a week to 10 days, gradually expose them to more light and wind. Make sure the soil does not dry out. They may need watering two or more times per day, especially on bright, warm, breezy days. But do not allow them to be waterlogged. Roots need oxygen as much as water and water-logging can lead to root death and rotting.

The May long weekend is the typical date for putting out bedding plants on the Prairies. But some hardier plants like pansy, artemisia and snapdragon can be planted one to two weeks earlier.

Plant late in the day or on a cloudy day to reduce transplant shock. Prepare the planting area by loosening up the soil with a rototiller, spade or hand tool. Make a hole slightly larger than the root ball than gently firm the soil around the plant once in the ground. Do not break up the root ball even if it is root bound – when you do this, you can destroy much of the existing system putting further stress on the plant and delaying establishment. Water seedlings in well. Many ornamental annuals respond well to pinching by producing a bushier plant. But do not pinch vegetables. Remove any open flowers to channel energy into establishing a robust root system. After a week in the ground, give your bedding plants a half-strength fertilizer solution (e.g. 20-20-20) to give them a boost.

Vegetables

Cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage can be direct seeded into your garden around April 9, assuming the ground can be worked, but it’s better to start them indoors around March 12 and then transplant them into the garden around May 1. Do the same with lettuce and spinach.

Plant onion starts and potatoes around March 22. Sow the seeds of peas (sugar snap and english) at the same time. If the ground is still frozen, then plant these as soon as the ground thaws.

Do you want to grow tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants? Start these indoors around March 12. Then, around May 17 you should start watching the weather forecast . Warm season plants like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers should only be planted when you are completely confident that all danger of frost is past (i.e. last week of May or even early June)  as soon as no frost is forecast, go ahead and transplant those into the ground.

Now, for all the summer vegetables like beans, cowpeas, corn, squashes, pumpkins, cucumbers, watermelons, gourds and sunflowers, you should plant those seeds directly into the ground around May 21, or if your soil is still very cold, once the soil is near 60° F in temperature. Having said that, note that Regina has a shorter than average growing season. Many summer vegetables need more days to mature than our area will provide. For that reason, we recommend you get a head-start by starting these summer vegetables indoors around May 1, and transplant those seedlings out after the danger of frost is past.
